Feathered Avibs

Avibs are bird-like insects native to Yindako.

There are a few families of avibs known to have "feathers" like Earth's birds.

This species is the other majorly urban-dwelling species called the River Avib (Avibracca flumens). Their native habitat was near ponds, lakes, and rivers where they can find their prey in abundance in shallow waters or flying near the surface. They feed on Endaki lancelets in the sediment of shallow water by scooping them up in flight, or on tiny flies by catching them in midair. They also feed on seeds and small fruit. Now they have found a better living in cities by feeding on garbage or crumbs left by people.
They are larger than the City Avib, generally the size of an American Goldfinch, although they coexist harmlessly with the city avib in urban environments. A key difference than most avibs is that there wings aren't membranous and insect-like, and are instead lined with feathers which are actually modified setae. Arthropod feathers make for lighter wings for their size, which allows the River avib to have longer wings for gliding. This is an advantage since they are a migratory species, flying north-to-south and vice versa each year with the seasons. However, even though they thrive in dense city environments such as the ones on Yindako, they have poor maneuverability between buildings up to certain speeds unlike the City avib. This is a problem since they feed on flies which are attracted to people.

Locomotion on the ground is similar to a vampire bat or pterosaur, walking on its wings. Small hook-like claws are used to cling to vertical surfaces to perch or roost. The prefer to live near patio cafes or malls where they can eat crumbs or scraps left on a table by someone.
