Description

My first legitimate non-sentient creature completed in Photoshop. Took about an hour. ~ScionSoul2500 helped me design it.

Avibraccae (Latin for "Wing Arm") or simply "Avibs" is a class of bird-like insectoids native to Yindako. But it can also apply to similar creatures native to Jinbo and Hoiine. They're characterized by a proboscis-mandible combo, four legs that double as wings, fine dense hair that act as feathers, three body segments, a pair of sponge-like lungs, and antennae.

This particular species is a Conifer Avib (Lepidoptus pinophyta) Males are about six grams while females are roughly nine. Males are characterized by brightly colored wings and fur to attract mates. Females are larger to carry eggs. The have a small beak-like mandible pair for peeling bark and sipping tree sap, or chewing pine needles. Their vocalizations are high-pitched chirping noises made by stridulation of the mandibles against the hollow growths on their beaks. The chirps can either attract a mate, or alert the colony of an incoming predator.

After mating, the male stays with the female to assist in her care of the offspring. The female carves a hollow cavity in tree trunks, or occupies abandoned ones. She will lay roughly 20-30 eggs in this nest. She is there to stay for the whole winter to take care of the eggs while the male occasionally leaves to find food. The nest is usually within the canopy to be out of the reach of predators.

Large compound eyes have several uses; They are specialized for finding the tallest tree above the horizon. For females, it's to spot the patterns on a male's wings. Their size is useful because during late autumn, they migrate constantly and need the vision to navigate through the night. When the colony is resting, members take turns scouting the proximity for predators.

They have recessed antennae to avoid damage from branches or trees. The are found in the avib's nostrils on the top of its head. This is an advantage because the antennae are small, but make up for it by collecting scents faster by sniffing.
